Thomas enlisted at Blackman, Michigan, at the age of 18 for 3 years of service on October 25, 1862, and took the muster oath on the same day. He reached the regiment at Falmouth, Virginia, on November 28, 1862. He was on duty with the 20th Infantry from January 7, 1864, to April 6, 1864. He was transferred to the Veteran reserve Corps on January 20, 1865. He was discharged at Camp Dennison, Ohio on October 11, 1865, from the 43rd Company, 2nd Battalion of the Veteran Reserve Corps.
