Enlisted at East Saginaw, Michigan, on September 15, 1862 for 3 years of service at the age of 31. He took the muster oath into Federal service on October 14, 1861. He served with the 9th Illinois Cavalry from January 31, 1864, until May 20, 1864, when he returned to service with the 3rd Michigan Cavalry until he was discharged at the end of his term of service on October 24, 1864, at Brownsville, Arkansas.
