Thomas enlisted as a Musician in the 44th Ohio Infantry on August 13, 1862 at the age of 20. He transfered to Company D, 8th Ohio Cavalry when that Regiment was organized from the ranks of the 44th and was captured at Beverly, West Virgina, then was sent to Libby Prison. He was paroled at Richmond on February 15, 1865, sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, where he was discharged from the service. He later received a disability for rheumatism caused by the Confederates making him walk through "cold creek water".
