Listed on the roster of the 6th Cavalry as John Boyle, John was a lumberjack born in Wurtemburg, immigrating to the United States in 1859. He lived in Stronach, Michigan, enlisting in the 6th Cavalry on August 29, 1862 for 3 years of service at the age of 25. He was taken prisoner at Seneca, Maryland, on June 11, 1863. Paroled, he returned to the regiment on November 1, 1863. Promoted to Corporal on February 1, 1865. He mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on November 24, 1865.
