From Ionia, Michigan, enlisted August 3, 1861, at Ionia for 3 years service at the age of 22. Captured by the Confederates at the Battle of Bull Run, Virginia, on August 29, 1862. Returned to the regiment on January 10, 1863, near Fort Scott, Virginia. Wounded in action at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Discharged at the end of his term of service at Detroit, Michigan, on September 27, 1864.
