Joseph, born September 21, 1842, enlisted from Kalamazoo County as a private on September 16, 1861. He was captured along with Jeremiah Mahoney and Marshman Maxon on November 9, 1864 while attempting to destroy pontoons that had been attached to piers left when the bridge was burned across the Tennessee River at Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He was a prisoner at Cahaba and ended up on the SULTANA where all three of these men were among the 500 survivors after the ship exploded on April 27, 1865. Joseph was discharged after a second tour of duty as a Sergeant on June 30, 1865. He died on December 19, 1917, and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Michigan.
