From Oakland County, Michigan, James enlisted on November 12, 1861 at Highland, Michigan, for 3 years of service at the age of 26. He took the muster oath on December 24, 1861. He served his 3 year term of service with Battery H and was discharged at the end of his term of service on December 24, 1864, at Louisville, Kentucky.
