Jeremiah Mahoney
Company I, 2nd Michigan CavalryJeremiah, was
born in Ireland and came to Michigan around 1860 by way of Canada. He
enlisted from Wayne County as a private at Dearborn, Michigan, on September 3,
1861. He was captured along with Joseph Mahoney and Marshman Maxon on November
9, 1864, while attempting to destroy pontoons that had been attached to piers
left when the bridge was burned across the Tennessee River at Muscle Shoals,
Alabama. He was a prisoner at Cahaba and ended up on the SULTANA where all
three of these men were among the 500 survivors after the ship exploded on
April 27, 1865. Joseph was discharged as a Corporal at Detroit,
Michigan, on June 30, 1865. After the war he moved to Chicago, Illinois
and died on July 11, 1894.
