     Spelled Morton or Martin in the Michigan records.

      James Morton (Company E, 16th Michigan Infantry), from Ionia County, enlisted Dec. 13, 1861 at Detroit, for period of 3 years, age 22.  Joined regiment at Hall’s Hill, Va, Jan. 11, 1862.  Wounded in action at Gaines Mill, June 27, 1862.  Wounded in action at 2nd Battle of Bull Run, August 30, 1862.  Wounded in action at Battle of Fredericksburg, Va., December 13, 1862.  Taken prisoner by rebels at Gettysburg, Pa., July 2, 1863.  Paroled at Richmond, Va., Nov. 16, 1863.  Admitted to St. Johns College Hospital, Annapolis, Va., Nov. 18, 1863.  Remained as a patient at St. Johns College Hospital until September 1864.  Returned to his regiment Oct., 1864.  Discharged at expiration of term of service at Petersburg, Va., Nov. 18, 1864.
