From Hudson, Michigan, John enlisted on August 22, 1862, at Hudson, Michigan, for three years service at the age of 22. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on April 22, 1864. Commissioned Junior 2nd Lieutenant September 21, 1864. Commissioned Senior 2nd Lieutenant in April of 1865. Mustered out at Detroit, Michigan, on July 14, 1865.
