From Mt. Clemens, Michigan, Joseph entered the Regiments service at its organization at Mt. Clemens, for 3 years of service at age 47. He was mustered in as a 2nd Lieutenant on July 26, 1862. Commissioned Captain on August 24, 1862. He was captured at Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 20, 1863, and was held as a P.O.W. until he was exchanged in May of 1865. He was discharged for disability on May 17, 1865.He is buried in the Clinton Grove Cemetery at Mt. Clemens, Michigan.
