From Kent County, Joseph enlisted in Company I on October 10, 1862 at Grandville for 3 years service at age 19. He took the muster oath on October 1, 1862. He re-enlisted at Mossy Creek, Tennessee, on January 5, 1864. He returned from Veteran furlough and was mustered in on March 29, 1864. He was listed as Missing in Action at Franklin, Tennessee, in October of 1864. He returned to the regiment and was promoted to Corporal on March 16, 1865. He mustered out at Macon, Georgia, on August 17, 1865.
