From Niles, Michigan, Lyman enlisted December 4, 1861, for 3 years of service at the age of 20. He took the Muster Oath on January 8, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal before he was discharged at DeVall's Bluff, Arkansas, on January 7, 1865.His descendant says he originally enlisted in the Michigan Lancer's. His name does not appear on the roll of the Lancer's though.
