From Assyria, Michigan, Francis enlisted for 3 years service on March 1, 1862, at Detroit, age 21. He re-enlisted on March 1, 1864, at Bealton, Va. Promoted to Corporal prior to his muster out at Jeffersonville, Indiana, on July 8, 1865. During his service he fought at the Siege of Yorktown, VA., Mechanicsville, VA., Second Bull Run in VA.,Antietam, Md., Chancellorsville, VA, and at Gettysburg, PA., Wilderness, VA., Spottsylvania, VA., and was present at Appomattox Court House when Lee surrendered.
