Lewis, enlisted at Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 8, 1864, for 3 years service at the age of 18. He was transferred to Company E, 5th Michigan Infantry on June 10, 1864. He was mustered out of the service at Jeffersonville, Indiana, on July 3, 1865.
