From Niles, Michigan, Mordecai enlisted as a Corporal on December 16, 1862 at Niles for three years service at the age of 37. He was promoted to Sergeant on June 29, 1864. He was discharged at Lexington, North Carolina, on July 21, 1865. He is buried in Morton Hill cemetery at Benton Harbor, Michigan.This photo was taken at a very popular spot on Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga, Tennessee, where a photographer had set up a small gallery. Mordecai is seated, the third man from the right. It is thought that the photo was taken in July of 1864.
