Obituary of 1910

Had an Enviable Record in the Great Civil War

Michael Kane passed away at his home at 512 North Cedar Street at 11:40 last night. Mr. Kane was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada the 15th day of July, 1845 and came to Lansing with his parents when he was eight years of age where he has lived and watched Lansing grow to what it is today.

He was married to Harriet Cornelia Joy, December 3, 1865 and to them was born five children, Frank and John, a daughter, Mrs. Orlo Wood, Alexander and Curtis, the last named who is dead.

Mr. Kane enlisted in the Civil War August 8, 1862, Company G, Third Michigan V.I. for three years and joined regiment at Arlington Heights in Third Brigade, First Division, Third Corps, Army of the Potomac. He participated in the Fredericksburg campaign and was in Burnside's Mud March, Jan 20-22, 1863. He also participated in the Chancellorsville and Gettysburg campaigns, later was ordered to New York to quell the draft riots. Later he returned to the Potomac army and participated in the Mine Run Campaign.

In March, 1864 he was assigned to the Second Brigade, Third division, Second Corps, Army of the Potomac. He participated in the Battle of the Wilderness, Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns till the surrender of Lee.

June 10, 1864 was transferred to Company F, Fifth Michigan, V.I. The most important actions engaged in were: Fredericksburg, Dec 13, 1862; Chancellorsville, May 1 to 4, 1863; Gettysburg from July 1 to 3; Wapping Heights, July 23; Kelly's Ford, Nov. 7; Mine Run, Nov 27 to 30; Battle of the Wilderness, May 5 to 7, 1864; Spottsylvania, May 8 to 18; North Amia, May 23 to 27; Cold Harbor, June 1 to 12; Petersburg, from June 17; Deep Bottom, July 27; Strawberry Plains, Aug 15 to 16; Preble's Farm, Sept. 30; Boydtown Road, Oct. 27; Hatcher's Run, March 25, 1865; Fall of Petersburg, April 2, Sailor's Creek, April 6; Appomattox, April 8 to 9.

Was wounded in the left shoulder by a shell at Cold Harbor. Honorably mustered out May 31, 1865, at Washington, D.C. He was a member of Protection Lodge I.O.O.F. No. 321 and Capital Canton No. 2

The funeral services will be held Thursday at the Universalist church under the direction of the Spiritualist church.
