From Ingham County, Joseph enlisted as a 1st Sergeant on November 16, 1861, at Lansing at the age of 23. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on July 4, 1862. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company E on May 30, 1863, then Adjutant on July 4, 1862. Commissioned Captain of Company D on July 10, 1864. Acting Assistant Inspector General of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the 14th Corps during April, May and June of 1865, He was mustered out of the service on July 18, 1865.
