From Cottrelville he enlisted at Cottrelville on Nov. 8, 1862, at age 21. He was appointed Company Bugler serving with the regiment in all of its movements and actions. He was captured by the Confederates on the "Macon Raid" on Aug. 6, 1864, and was imprisoned until he was paroled just before the end of the war in April of 1865. He returned to service, transferring to Company D of the 8th, remaining with that Company until he was mustered out at Nashville, Tn on Sept. 22, 1865. This is a postwar photo, probably taken at his home in Alpena, Mi.
