1st Michigan Light Artillery,Mathias enlisted in
Company H,
9th Michigan Cavalry at Otisco, Michigan, on December 25, 1862, at
the age of 20. He was transferred to Battery L, 1st Michigan
Light Artillery on May 1, 1863. He was promoted to Corporal on
March 3, 1864, then to Sergeant on March 1, 1865. He mustered
out of the service at Jackson, Michigan, on August 22,
1865.
