From Jackson, Michigan, Putnam enlisted on November 27, 1861, for 3 years of service at age 18. He re-enlisted at Rossville, Ga, on February 6, 1864. He attained the rank of Corporal before his muster out at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 19, 1865. His brother Alva of the 1st Engineers is the man on his leftThe reunion photo was taken on Balance Rock on the top of Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
