From Grand Rapids, Michigan, James enlisted at the organization of the regiment as a captain at the age of 39. He was commissioned on September 12, 1862. He died at Tullahoma, Tennessee, on November 15, 1863, when the train he was riding was derailed from the track by a band of guerillas.
