Born in Fayette, New York, Jacob, a farmer, enlisted in Company F, 5th New York Infantry on May 21, 1861. He served with the 5th New York until he mustered out as a Sergeant. He re-enlisted in Company K, 4th Michigan Infantry, (Re-Organized) at Allen, Michigan, on February 23, 1864, for 3 years service at the age of 37. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company K on March 15, 1865. He continued to serve with the regiment until he was mustered out on May 26, 1866, at Houston, Texas.
