Lewis Youngblood Struble of Oxford, Michigan, enlisted in Company A of the 5th Michigan Cavalry as a corporal on August 18, 1862, at Bruce, Michigan, for 3 years at the age of 30. He mustered August 26, 1862. He was wounded in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 3, 1863, transferred to the invalid corps on March 15, 1864, and honorably discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability at Elmira, New York, on December 22, 1864 from the 6th company, 2nd battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps. After the war he settled in Metamora, Michigan, where he died on July 20, 1906. Burial in the Metamora Cemetery.Throughout the war he carried daguerreotype pictures of his wife and children in a leather case which his family still treasures.
