Talmon enlisted on January 23, 1862, Almont, Michigan, and reenlisted on February 6, 1864, at Rossville, Georgia. He was wounded at Peach Tree Creek on July 20, 1864. He mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 19, 1865. He died May 30, 1930, with burial in the Upton Cemetery, Genesee, Michigan.
