From Lenox, Michigan, Lyman enlisted as a Corporal at Ray, Michigan for 3 years of service at age 45 on August 9, 1862. He was wounded in action at Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 20, 1863. Recovered from his wounding he was later transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on May 30, 1864. He was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee on June 30, 1865, from the 154th Company, 2nd Battalion of the Veteran reserve Corps. He is buried at the Imlay Township Cemetery in Imlay City, Michigan.
