Thomas was from Livonia, Michigan, enlisting in the 24th Michigan Infantry at Plymouth, Michigan, for 3 years of service on August 9, 1862, at the age of 21. He mustered into federal service on August 9, 1862. He was discharged for disability at Frederick, Maryland, on November 13, 1862. After the war, Thomas moved his family to Washington State where he died on August 17, 1891. He was buried in Sequim City, WA Cemetery, presumably with a G.A.R. ceremony Michigan.
