Thomas enlisted at Hillsdale, Michigan, at the age of 42 for 3 years of service and took the muster oath on March 29, 1864. He reached the regiment on May 23, 1864. He was wounded and in Chester Hospital at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 27, 1864. He returned to duty February 23, 1865. He was taken prisoner on March 25, 1865, later released and was discharged at Detroit, Michigan, on August 3, 1865. His postwar address was Cambria, Michigan.
