John enlisted in the 8th Cavalry on August 5, 1864 at Jackson, Michigan, for one year of service at the age of 22. He took the muster oath into Federal service on August 5, 1864.He reached the regiment, already in the field, at Lexington, Kentucky, on September 6, 1864. He served with the regiment until he was discharged at Pulaski, Tennessee, on June 10, 1865.
