From Assyria, Michigan, Wesley enlisted in Company K, 6th Michigan Cavalry on September 10, 1862, for 3 years service at the age of 19. He was taken prisoner at Trevillion Station, Va, on June 11, 1864. While being sent to prison at Florence, South Carolina, he escaped and returned to the Union lines. He was discharged for disability at Baltimore, Maryland, on May 19, 1865.
