From Polktown, Michigan, Walter enlisted on August 5, 1862, as a Sergeant for three years service at the age of 24. He took the muster oath on August 28, 1862. He was captured while on picket duty near Nashville, Tennessee, on December 15, 1862. He was imprisoned at Libby Prison and Castle Thunder, Virginia, before he was paroled and returned to the regiment in May of 1863. Promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant and then 1st Sergeant he was later shot through the left lung in battle near Fairburn, Georgia, on August 19, 1864, while participating on the Kilpatrick Raid in the rear of Atlanta, Georgia. He recovered and served out his term of service and was discharged on May 15, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee. From the inscription on the photo it appears he resided in Coopersville, Michigan in later years.
