From Berrien, Michigan, William enlisted as a Sergeant on October 11, 1861, at Berrien for 3 years service at age 24. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on October 12, 1862. Re-enlisted December 25, 1863 at Little Rock, Arkansas. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant on March 30, 1864. He resigned from the service on May 31, 1865.
