From Commerce, Michigan William enlisted on August 21, 1862, at Milford for 3 years service at age 29. He was promoted to Sergeant prior to his capture at Trevillian Station, Virginia. Held as a P.O.W. until wars end he was discharged at Camp Chase, Ohio, on June 12, 1865. His postwar residence was Commerce where he died in 1912, and is buried there in the Commerce Cemetery.
