From Detroit, Michigan, William enlisted on April 18, 1861, in the 1st Michigan Infantry, Company A for 3 months service at the age of 22. He was wounded in action and sent to a Washington, D.C. Hospital in July of 1861. He mustered out of the 1st on August 7, 1861, then re-entered service as a Sergeant Major in the 16th Michigan Infantry. He was Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company C on November 3, 1862, and then assigned to Company G on November 18, 1862, and Commissioned 1st Lieutenant. He was Chief of Pioneers of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the 5th Army Corps from April of 1864 until he was discharged at the end of his term of service on September 7, 1864.
