William B. Lapham (1838-1925), born November 13, 1838 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan. A laborer prior to the war, and a man of about 5'9", dark complexion, and gray eyes. On June 20, 1861, at the age of 22, in Adrian, William was mustered in the Fourth Michigan Infantry, Company I. He served for three years, being discharged for disability by order General Sykes, February 19, 1863. According to family records, William was quite ill by the time of his discharge, having rheumatism, chronic diarrhea, dizziness, bronchial trouble, numbness of feet and ankles, and he coughed up blood for the rest of his life. He appeared to remain quite ill and unable to work much for the rest of his life after the war. This is reflected in his applications for pensions and declarations of doctors and neighbors who verified his physical disabilities.
