From Adrian, Michigan, William enlisted in Company B, 4th Michigan Infantry as a musician, June 20, 1861, for 3 years service. He was discharged for disability on September 3, 1861, then re-entered the service again on December 5, 1861. He was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant by July of 1862. On December 29, 1863, he re-enlisted for the duration of the war, and was wounded at the battle of the Wilderness on the following May 5, 1864. He recovered from his wounds and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and then Captain of Company A on February 9, 1865. He served the rest of the war with Company A and was mustered out on February 13, 1866.
