OLDPORT

Mr. Dominic Can (sic) Wassenova, one of our oldest pioneer residents of this place passed to his eternal rest at his residence north of Oldport, Monday, Dec. 22nd, after a lingering illness due to old age. Funeral services were held on the following Wednesday at 9:30 a.m at St. Charles' church, Oldport, requiem high mass sung by Rev. T. G. Morin, pastor of the church, who also delivered an eloquent sermon. Mr. Van Wassenova was the oldest son of the late Charles and Dorotha Van Wassenova, and was born in Belgium, Europe, June 17, 1835, and was 84 years and 6 months old at the time of his death.

He came to this country with his parents in 1844 who came directly to Monroe and settled on a large farm near Laplaisance in Monroetown, where the deceased spent his early life at farming.

He was united in Marriage in St. Mary's church, Monroe, to Miss Angeline Shatelro by Rev. John Janip in 1856 and shortly after they settled on a farm in LaSalle, where they remained till 1862 when they sold their place and bought 80 acres of timbered land north of Oldport where he died. By hard pioneer work they converted the timbered land to a fine farm and a comfortable home was built for themselves and their family.

He leaves to mourn his departure his aged widow, four sons - Charles, Frank, John and Bennie and two daughters, Mrs. John Roberts, all of this vicinity and Mrs. John Frankhouse, of Monroe, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Trombley, of Oldport; 23 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and a host of friends.
