StraubFrenchtown Trustee Edward [R.] Straub, 75, diesEdward R. Straub, 75, a Frenchtown [Monroe County, Michigan] township trustee since 1980 and a former assistant fire chief for 29 years, died at 1:50 a.m. today in his home.Services are pending in the Rupp Runeral Home. A staunch objector to some of the township’s fire department spending and popular with senior voters, Mr. Straub is remembered as a sometimes controversial membr of the township board. “I guess Ed was a bit rough like I am, but he didn’t hide anything,” said township Supervisor James K. Spas. “Most everything that was on his mind came out of his mouth, and I respect him for than. And I’m going to miss him.” Longtime Trustee Arlene Gerweck said she sometimes was at odds with mr. Straub on township issues, but said he was always dedicated. “Ed served very well. He was always there,” she said. Mr. Straub was a World War II Veteran who fought in Europe. He first served on the township board from 1970 to 1974 and again from 1980 until his death. By the time of his 1980 election, he had served 12 years as township constable and 29 years as assistant fire chief. He was also president of the Monroe County Fireman Association in the 1960’s. He served during the era when the township had only a volunteer fire department. The department now is staffed by paid full-time and on-call firefighters. Edward G. Daniels, a township resident and former volunteer firefighter, said mr. Straub always did a good job as a firefighter. “When he and I were active in the fire department, it was all on a volunteer basis. He devoted a lot of hours to the fire department,” Mr. Daniels said. As a trustee, Mr. Straub was a hard-liner on fire department spending. For example, in recent years he unsuccessfully pushed to have firefighters mow fire station yards instead of having the township pay a lawn service to cut them. Mr. Straub had been too ill to attend township board meetings for the last three of four months, Mr. Spas said.

Straub Sr. , 75, of Monroe, who died at 4:50 a.m. Thursday in his home. He had been seriously ill since December.Friends may call 1-9 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday in Rupp Funeral Home. He will lie in state Monday in St. Anne Catholic Church from 10:15 a.m. until services at 11. The Rev. David Brock will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery under the auspices of Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Flags at township buildings will fly at half mast through April 21 in his honor. [picture included] Born Sept. 5, 1919, in Maybee, he was the son of John and Katherine (Schnepf) Straub. He was married to Ellen Stoddard on June 21, 1941, in St. Mary Catholic Church. He was employed by Consolidated Packaging Corp. from 1939 to 1978 and for Union Camp Corp. from 1978 to 1980. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Straub served on the Frenchtown Township [Monroe County, Michigan] Board from 1970-1974 and again from 1980 until his death. He also served on the township planning commission, the zoning board of appeals and was a liason officer for the Senior Citizens Board. He also was a former member of the Frenchtown Township Volunteer Fire Department, including serving as assistant chief of Station No. 2, for 29 years. He was a member of St. Anne Church and its Men’s Club, and a former member of Monroe Lodge 884, Loyal Order of the Moose, and Woodland Beach Association. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Edward R., Jr., Charles E., and Michael J. All of Monroe; two daughters, Mrs. Richard H. (Linda) Gagne and Susan M. Straub, both of Monroe; four brothers, Bernard, Harold, and Richard, all of Monroe, and Leo of Allen Park; three sisters, Cleta M. Eby, and June Dushane, both of Monroe, and Ruth Debruyne of Bitely, and six grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Lee; two brothers, Lawrence and John, and a sister, Gertrude Gramlich. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Monroe.
