SOUTH BRANCH – John D. (Willie) Straub, 77, of South Branch, formerly of Maybee, died at 2:52 this morning in St. Joseph Hospital, Tawas, where he had been for the past three days after suffering a stroke.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday and from noon to 9 p.m. Friday in the Liedel Funeral Home, Maybee, where a Scripture service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maybee. The Rev. Casimir Wiercioch will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Maybee.

Born May 13, 1917, in London Township, [Monroe County, Michigan] he was the son of John and Catherine (Schnepf) Straub. He was married July 29, 1936, to Kathleen L. Mentel in Monroe.

Mr. Straub had been employed as a maintenance welder by the Monroe Stamping Plant, ford Motor Co., for 25 yrs, retiring in 1974. he moved to South Branch in 1976.

He had attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Maybee and was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in Hale.

Surviving are his wife; five sons, Charles of Monroe, Thomas of Bay City, Lawrence of Canton, Franklin of Essexville and John of Taylor; five daughters, Mrs. Norman (Donna) Dennis and Mrs Philip (Teresa) Pietrowski, both of Dundee, Mrs. Douglas (Judy) Hillman of Essexville, Mrs. Mark (Beth) Jedynak of Holly and Mrs. Jimmy (Shirley) Bassham of Burton; five brothers, leo of Taylor, Bernard, Edward, Harold and Richard, all of Monroe; three sisters, mrs. Cleta Eby and Mrs. William (June) Dushane, both of Monroe, and Mrs. Ruth DeBruyne of Bitely; 21 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a brother and a sister.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, South Central Michigan Chapter, or St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maybee.

He was also preceeded in death by a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
