Mrs. Gabriel Bissonette

On Saturday, May 15th at 11:00 o'clock, Mrs. Gabriel Bissonette passed away from the effects of a stroke of paralysis sustained on Monday of the same week, and her death removes from the city one of our oldest pioneers. She was born in Ireland Dec. 20, 1824, and when ten years old came to America, the family settling in New York. Two or three years later she came to this city and when 24 years old was married to matthew Smith and lived here until his death. In May 1854, she was married to Gabriel Bissonette, whoe death occurred on March 1, 1900, since which time she has lived with her daughter, at the Washington Square Apartments, this city. The funeral services were held on Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock from St. Mary's church, Rev. Fr. Joos and Downey officiating and the remains were interred at St. Josephs cemetery. The pall bearers were Thornton Dixon, Dr. H. C. Orvis, Jesse W. White, C. B. Southworth, Job W. McMillan and James Bentley. Honorary pall bearers were Nevin J. Custer, Hon. H. A. Lockwood, P. B. Loranger, Thurlow A. Strong, Dr. C. T. Southworth, and Ed G. J. Lauer. Mrs. Bissonette was of a very quiet and reserved disposition, fond of her home and family and never happier than when looking after her home duties and, as was often the case, lending a helping hand to a friend or neighbor. She raised to maturity nine children who survive her and she also leaves fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
