submitted by Judy Lewis | Newport is a small farming community, settled mostly by French Canadians. The land for St Charles Church was donated by Frank Masserant Sr who came to Newport from France in about 1854. There are two cemeteries for the church. The old cemetery is located south of the church on Dixie Hwy. There are only a few headstones left, even though it is well cared for. The newer cemetery is north of the church on Dixie Hwy. |
Old City Burial Ground S. Monroe and W. Seventh Street | ||

“Although earlier cemeteries which have since disappeared existed at Monroe and Front Streets and Monroe at 6th Street, this sacred ground is the successor to the first parish cemetery established in 1794 and abandoned in 1830. That first cemetery was located west of Monroe on N. Custer Rd. as part of the St. Antoine’s church land. Parishioners renamed their church St. Mary’s, locating it at Elm Avenue and Monroe Street and consecrating a new burial ground on this site. During the cholera epidemic of 1832 victims of all nationalities and religions were buried alongside the Roman Catholic parishioners to whom it was once dedicated.” |
Moses Gaynier was the son of Louis Gagnier and Marie-Claire Menard.
He was born 7 May 1823 and baptized 19 October 1824. On 21 October 1845,
he married Zoe Robert, the daughter of Ignace Robert and Catherine
Thuot, dit Duval. According to his burial record, Moses died on 24 April
1865 and was buried on the 27th.

This is a picture of my great great grandfathers grave at St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery in Monroe, Michigan. His name was Ludwig Knab and he was born 24 February 1793 in Baden-Wuettemberg, Germany. He died on 3 April 1874 in Monroe, Monroe County Michigan. |
He was married to Madeline Zahnlocker Knab born 1801 and died 1951. They
had 5 children. Madeline is also buried at St Pauls but we have been
unable to find a stone for her. A very rough translation of the
inscription at the bottom of the head stone reads, "The graves open up
to honor, home and the world. Today you are still taking care of your
home but at the dark front gate. The waning day extinguishes your life."
words were either a very old dialect or person sculpting the stone was
not literate.
