In 1850 Westbrook Devine, Eureka Township clerk, purchased four acres of land from John Green for $100. This land was put aside for a cemetery for Eureka Township residents. Burials from Peck farm were moved to this site at that time. When Carpenter C. Merritt created Forest Home Cemetery, in the 1870's, all the interments were moved from the Veterans Park location to Forest Home.
There are rumors that burials and stones became disorganized and mixed up in the move. Not all the new locations were marked and some markers didn't make the less than 2 mile trek to their new home. |
