Vitals | Conrad Herzog was born Konradus Herzog 4 Jan 1836, in Katholisch, Lauf, Baden, Germany to Joseph and Elizabeth (Deiterville) Herzog. The 1910 census indicates he immigrated in 1850. There is a Conrad Herzog on a ship's passenger list for the ship Zurich in 1855. There is only one Herzog listed. He married 16 Jan 1866 in Dearborn County, Indiana, Barbara Feuerstein. She was born 24 Jun 1843 to Johannes/John and Apolonia (Kemp) Feuerstein. Conrad and Barbara had the following children: Barbara Elizabeth (1866-1938) wife of William Abbey; Mary Jeramia (1868-1868); Mary Louisa, (1868-1868); Joseph (1869-1953) husband of Addie Dell Salisbury; John Herzog (1871-1934) husband of Jennie Ferris and Daisy Ferris; Peter (1873-1917) husband of Ida Jane Salisbury; Amelia (1875-1892); Wilhelm/William (1877-1958) husband to Debbie Caroline Salisbury; Maggie (1878-1878); Henry W. (1879-1957) husband of Vella B. Wandel; Elenore/Nora M.(1884-1953) wife of Bert Wilber, Wm. J. Fontaine, Floyd C. Hafey and Hansen; Matilda (1889-1909). Conrad's name is recorded many ways: Conrad, Conrod, Coonrod, Konrad and Herzog, Heico, Hertzog, Hartsue, Haycoil. In the 1920 census Barbara is living with her daughter, Nora M. Wilber, in Cato Township, Montcalm County. Barbara died 23 December 1920 in Lakeview and is buried in Maple Valley Cemetery in Montcalm County. |

Service | Conrad Herzog was 25 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company G, 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, for three months service, afterwards under General Banks. He was promoted to Sergeant and was discharged from this enlistment 2 Aug 1861, at Indianapolis, IN, and re-enlisted 6 Aug 1861, in Company K, 26th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, October 1863. While on picket duty, he was captured at Morgency Bend, Mississippi, and held in prison at Tyler, TX, about eleven months. He recieved his honorable discharge from this enlistment, 24 Sep 1864 at Indianpolis, IN, and re-enlisted 9 Feb 1865, for one year, in Company H, 146th Indiana Infantry. He took active part in the battles of Perrysville, Vicksburg, Yazoo City and Laurel Hill, recieving an honorable discharge from his third enlistment, 3 Aug 1865, in Baltimore, MD. He was pensioned. | ||
