Vitals | George W. Brokaw was born in Steuben County, NY 12 Dec 1836 to John and Catherine (Longcore) Brokaw. George married Maria Coy 10 Sep 1862 at her parents' home in Northfield, Washtenaw County, MI. She was the daughter of Horace and Hannah (Smith) Coy. Her birth was on 21 Apr 1840 in Ann Arbor, MI. They settled in Montcalm County in May of 1890. They had the following children: Ella (died young); Adah J. (1865-1945) wife of Walter Sober; Elmer T. (1868-1940) husband of Lillian E. Calvin; Lida B. (1872-1953) wife of Frank Earnest; and Zella G. (1874-) wife of Isaac Holley. |

Service | George W. Brokaw was a farmer in Washtenaw County, MI when he enlisted from Ann Arbor on 21 Apr 1861. He became a 25 year old private in Company E, 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He fought at First Bull Run and was given an honorable discharge at Detroit, MI in January of 1865, having served 3 years and 8 months. He was pensioned. | ||
