His parents were Samuel and Jane (Spencer) McClelland, both born in Nova Scotia, Canada. Samuel died in 1859 and is buried in Oakfield Cemetery, Kent County, MI. George married Phebe Anna (Cameron) Gott, 31 May 1906 in Spencer Township, Kent County, MI. She was born to parents Peter Cameron and Sarah Bristol, 12 Nov 1852. This was her fourth marriage and his first. Her husbands were George Bunnell, George Hatfield, John Gott and George McClelland. Phebe became a widow in 1910. She died of cancer, 31 Mar 1914, and is also buried in Spencer Mills Cemetery. |

Service | George McClelland, age 22, was farming in Spencer Township, Kent County, MI, when he enlisted as a private in Company E, Eighth Michigan Volunteer Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 9th A. C. He was promoted to Sergeant and took part in the following battles: Second Bull Run, Chantilly, Wilderness, South Mountain, Antietam, Iron Works, Fredericksburg, and the Siege of Knoxville. He was slightly wounded at Spottsylvania Court House by a musket ball in the left arm. In the fall of 1861 he was in the hospital at Beaufort, South Carolina, with measles. Discharged from the first enlistment at Strawberry Plains, East Tennessee, where he received a furlough of 30 days, he reenlisted in the same command. He was detailed in the fall of 1863 as brigade butcher for two months, and received his final honorable discharge at Detroit, MI. He was pensioned. | ||
