James married Cynthia (Newell) Phelps 7 Aug 1897 in Courtland Township, Kent County MI. She was born in Perry Township, Genesee County, New York, the daughter of Alfred Newell and Sally Barnes. Cynthia died 10 June 1902 in Kent County, MI. She is buried in Courtland Township Cemetery. On 7 Oct 1903, James married Emma Hart in Marion, Osceola County, MI. She was born in New York in 1847. She was 56 and he was 82 years of age. Their marriage record states that he had been married 3 times and she once. |

Service | At age 41 he enlisted for three years on 1 Aug 1862 in Nelson Township, Kent County, MI He was a Private in Company F, 6th MI Cavalry. Records also list him with Company H and Company K. He received a surgeon's disability discharge on 1 Apr 1863. He was pensioned. |
