Vitals | Robert Heliker was born in Livingston County, New York 28, Jul, 1837. His parents were William and Julia (Durkee) Heliker. He married, 1 Jul 1866, Mary La Valey in Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio. She was born in Syracuse, NY, 28 Mar 1853 to J. LaValley and Catherine/Calista. They came to Montcalm County in June of 1872. Robert and Mary had three children: Henrietta/Ettie M. (1869-1951) wife of William H. Colwell and Andrew B. Banta; Loia M. (1870-1925) wife of George W. Hayes and Luke C. Marks; and Julia D. (1880-1947) wife of Frank Wright and Christian Funk. Robert Heliker died in Bloomer Township, Montcalm County, MI, 2 Jan 1898. After the death of her husband, Mary wed L. K. Mason on 18 Jun 1924, in Stanton, MI. She died 20 Oct 1930. She is also buried in Palo Cemetery. |

Service | Robert was farming in Ashland County, OH, when he enlisted at Mansfield OH, 1 Dec 1861. He was a private in Company G, 65th OH Volunteer Infantry, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 14th A. C. He fought at Stone River, Pittburg Landing, Chickamauga, Perry ville and Missionary Ridge. At Missionary Ridge he received a severe gunshot wound to his left arm, close to the shoulder. He was treated in hospitals at Chattanooga, Nashvile and Louisville for eleven months. He went from weighing 145 pounds down to a mere 60 pounds. He received an honorable discharge 5 Oct 1864 at Camp Dennison, OH and was pensioned. | ||

Obit | Carson City Gazette, Jan. 7, 1898. Robert Heliker of West Bloomer, died at his home Sunday morning. Death resulted from an abcess under the right arm. The uneras was largely atteded and was held at the M. E. Church in West Bloomer, Tuesday, at 10:30 AM, the services being conducted by Rev. G. H. Lockhart of Palo, and Rev. N. L. Otis. The decesed was a soldier in the war for the union in Co. G., 65th Ohio Infantry, and lost the use of his left arm by a gun shot wound. He was born in Livingston Co., NY, in 1837, moved to Ohio in 1855 and in 1878 settled in Bloomer Township. In early life he was a member of the M. E. Church. He leaves a widow, three daughters and brothers and sisters. Burial Palo Cemetery. |
