Vitals | Silas J. Loveless was born in Cold Springs, Onondaga County, NY on 13 Mar 1847. His parents were Jonas and Clarissa (Smith) Loveless. According to Civil War muster roll abstracts, he was 5 feet 3 inches tall, had blue eyes, auburn hair and a light complexion. He was a carpenter and a farmer. He was married to Libby before 1875. She was born in Oswego, NY, around 1855. Did she die or divorce him? He married Delila Van Patten in Buffalo, NY, on 9 Jan 1888. She was born 4 Sep 1856 in Cayuga County, NY, the daughter of Nicholas and Maria (Bartlett) Van Patten. They moved to Montcalm County 27 Aug 1888. Delila died in 1932 and is buried in Union Hill Cemetery, Cato, NY. They had these children: Jay S. (1888-1961) born in Amble, was husband to Lillian Charlotte Turner; and Frank V. (1891-1971) born in Amble was husband to Ethel Halstead; Thura Blanche (1895) born in Amble, was the wife of Ralph B. Havens and Henry Hudson; Delia M. (1899-1972) born in Amble, was the wife of Erick Erickson. |

Service | At the age of 18 he enlisted as a private in Company B, 11th NY Cavalry, 19th A. C. at Syracuse, NY. In August of 1864 he was in the hospital near Baton Rouge ten days with yellow jaundice. He transferred at Germantown, TN in August 1865 to Company D, 11th NY Cavalry and took an active part in the battle of Liberty, Mississippi, receiving an honorable discharge, 30 Sep 1865, in Memphis, TN. He was pensioned. | ||

Obit | The death of Silas J. Loveless occured at his home about 10 o'clock, last night, due to a hemorrhage of the lungs. He has been ill for some time but had been able to be about until Tuesday night, when his condition became more serious. Mr. Loveless was born at Cold Spring (unreadable section). He was well and favorably known. He was a veteran of the civil war and served with company D., 11th Volunteer Cavalry. He was an honored member of Cato Lodge, F. & A. M. and a member of the p???masters association. The near relatives left to mourn his loss are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Blache Havens of Buffalo, Miss Delia Lovells of this place, two sons, Jay of Bogota, NJ, and Frank of Meridian, a sister, Mrs. Adda Havens of Syracuse and three grandchildren, Doris and Donald Loveless and Thelma Havens. The funeral, in charge of J. A. Dallas withh be held from the Presbyterian Church, Saturday afternoon, at two o'clock, with the committal service in charge of the Masonic lodge. |
