Vitals | William Valentine was born in Allen County, Ohio. He was the son of Archibald N. and Margeret (Clum) Valentine. In the fall of 1883 he settled in Montcalm County with his wife, Elizabeth Ellen Custer. Elizabeth was born 11 April 1850, also in Allen County. She was the daughter of Jacob L. and Malissa M. (Lane) Custer. William and Elizabeth were married in Ionia County on 23 September 1869. Their children were Nora F. (1870-1887); Geneva Olive (1872-1993) wife of Jay E. Church; Daisy Dell (1874-1953), wife of John Clifford Sack; James Franklin (1877-1945), husband of Lulu McCall; Clarence Elmer (1879-1918); Grace Edna (1881-1936) wife of Arvis D. Kinney; and Lola Belle (1888-1946), wife of Stephen Arnold. Elizabeth Ellen Valentine died 11 Jun 1899. She is buried in McBride Cemetery, McBride, MI. He married second Mattie P. Hornbeck Ellsworth on 8 Dec 1902 (Marriage Book C, p. 309). She died 22 Mar 1930 and is buried in Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King, Waupaca County, WI. Service | At the age of 18, on February 23, 1865, William Valentine enlisted from Lima, Ohio, as a private in Company H, 191st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His army life was chiefly passed in guard and garrison duty and he was given an honorable discharge, August 27, 1865, at Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Valentine was pensioned. | ||
Siblings | Two brothers were also in the service. George went out in the same command and was living in 1894. Aaron served in the 54th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was wounded by a shell. The effects of his injury made him insane for a time but he recovered. Elizabeth's brother, John W. Custer, also served in the Union Army and was living in 1894. | ||

Obit | Wm. Valentine was born in Allen county, Ohio, November 25, 1847, and passed away at his home in this place, March 15, 1918. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, Mattie Valentine, 4 daughters, Mrs. Jay Church, of McBride, Mrs. John Sack, and Mrs. Steven Arnold of Edmore, Mrs. A. D. Kinney, of Cadillac, 2 sons, Frank and Clarence Valentine, of McBride, 5 brothers and 1 sister, George, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Aaron, of Harrod, Ohio, Sanwel, of Grand Rapids, James and Bert of Lake Odessa, and Mrs. Hiram Barkdull, of Lake Odessa. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday forenoon. The remains were laid to rest in the receiving vault at McBride. | ||
