Carl Wyckoff Purdy

Carl Wyckoff Purdy was born in Orleans, Ionia County, MI, February 16, 1894.

His parents were George Clarence Purdy (1869-1958) and Nellie Grant Wyckoff (1872-1940).

Carl married Hazel G. Vining on Christmas Eve of 1917 in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, MI. She was born May 4, 1890. They had two daughters. One died as an infant in 1926. The other daughter, Jacquelyn J. Purdy (1924-2000), married Kenneth G. Aylsworth in Oklahoma, May 22, 1943.

On his draft card, June 5, 1917, Carl is listed as age 23, single, with medium height and weight, dark blue eyes and light brown hair. He has two fingers off between first and second joints. At the time he is listed as a mechanic working for Pittsburg Model Engine Company in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
Carl became a Corporal in Company B, 338th Infantry, 85th Division in WWI. His unit set sail for Europe on the Orca, July 22, 1918, from New York harbor. His return was on the U.S.S. Leviathan which set sail March 26, 1919, from Port Brest, France.
On the 1920 census he is listed as a fireman for the railroad, in 1930 he is a laborer at a table factory, and in 1940 he is superintendent of a cemetery. He was also zoning administrator for Eureka Township.

Obituary
Carl W. Purdy, 64, R3 died Tuesday afternoon at Blodgett Memorial Hospital, Grand Rapids, where he had been a patient for six days. A veteran of World War I, he was born at Orleans, Feb. 16, 1894, the son of George and Nellie Purdy. He had resided in Greenville and area for 55 years. Mr. Purdy was superintendent oat Forest Home Cemetery for 22 years, retiring in 1952. He was a member of the Congregational Church, the American Legion and 40 et 8.

On Dec. 24, 1917, he married the former Hazel Vining at Big Rapids. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Jacquelin) Aylsworth, Greenville; a sister, Mrs. T. P. (Martha) Gies, Hastings, and one granddaughter, Karen Aylsworth.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Brown-Teman Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard L. Ford and Dr. S. C. Parsons will officiate and temporary interment will be at Forest Home mausoleum.

Hazel Purdy died in October of 1983. Carl died December 9, 1958 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery, section 10.
